Belonging, Faith, and Life Together
When you place your faith in Jesus Christ and follow him, you become part of God’s family. Scripture describes this family as the church—the community of all who trust in Christ across all places and times. Covenant Presbyterian Church is a local expression of that wider church, gathered in Jackson to worship God, grow in faith, and serve our neighbors.
For many people, belonging to a local church is something that grows over time. We are glad for questions, conversation, and seasons of discernment. Membership at Covenant is not about rushing a decision, but about recognizing when God is calling you to make this church your spiritual home.
Why Membership Matters
Church membership is not simply a formality. It is a way of naming a real, lived relationship.
At Covenant, membership means:
- Belonging to a particular church family where you are known and cared for
- Receiving focused pastoral care and diaconal support from elders, pastors, and deacons who have been called to serve this congregation
- Sharing responsibility for the life, worship, and mission of the church
- Growing in faith together, through worship, prayer, learning, and service
Scripture speaks of church leaders as those who “keep watch over your souls” (Hebrews 13:17). Membership helps clarify this relationship of care and responsibility. It allows both leaders and members to know who has chosen to walk together in faith, encouragement, accountability, and mutual commitment.
Taking Your Time
Membership is an important step, and it is normal to take time before you are ready.
You do not need to be a member in order to:
- Attend worship
- Participate in Sunday School or other classes
- Ask questions or explore what we believe
When you do decide to pursue membership, we want that decision to be thoughtful, joyful, and well supported.
How Membership Works
We regularly offer a Membership Class that introduces the life, beliefs, and practices of Covenant Presbyterian Church. The class is designed to:
- Explain what we believe and how we worship
- Describe how our church is led and cared for
- Provide space for questions and conversation
- Help you get to know others who are also exploring membership
Following the class, those who wish to join meet with elders or pastors to share their profession of faith, reaffirm their faith, or transfer membership from another Christian church. New members are then welcomed and introduced to the congregation.
Baptism accompanies membership for anyone who has not previously been baptized.
A Historic Profession of Faith
Those who join Covenant make a profession of faith that Christians have used for generations. These questions are not meant as an exam, but as a way of clearly and simply expressing trust in Jesus Christ and a desire to live as his disciple within the church.
In the membership process, you will be asked whether you:
- Acknowledge your need for God’s mercy as a sinner
- Trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation
- Desire, by God’s grace, to live as a follower of Christ
- Intend to support and participate in the life and ministry of this church
- Are willing to live under the pastoral care and spiritual oversight of the church
These questions are carefully explored and addressed pastorally, with room for conversation and growth.
Children and Membership
At Covenant, we believe children are an important part of the church family. When adults join the church, their children are also received into the congregation's care and nurture. We look forward to walking alongside families as children grow in faith and, in time, make their own profession of faith.
